Cake Decorating Central - Making Cake Decorating Fondant

Sooner or later, on your journey to learn cake decorating, you will most likely have to or want to try using a cake decorating fondant coating on one or more of your cakes.

The dictionary definition of fondant says; fon-dant, noun, meaning: a soft creamy preparation of sugar, water, and flavorings that is used as a basis for candies or cakes. It can give a cake a beautiful satin finish prized by many brides for their wedding cakes.
Regular fondant can be difficult to make and is not very palatable. To solve that problem I recommend a marshmallow fondant and will give you the recipe and some techniques on how to make this cake decorating fondant inexpensively and quite easily.
You will amaze your family and friends with this beautiful coating on the cake.
For this type of fondant you will need:
  • 16 ounces white mini-marshmallows
  • 2 to 5 tablespoons water
  • 2 pounds icing sugar
  • 1/2 cup Crisco shortening
The first thing you want to do is melt the marshmallows.
The minis are way easier to melt and produce a less lumpy finished product. You can use a double boiler or a stainless steel bowl over boiling water technique but I have found the best and fastest way is to use your microwave.
Put the marshmallows in a microwave safe bowl on high for 30 seconds take out and stir put in for another 30 seconds take out and stir continue doing this until marshmallow mix is smooth and silky (about 2 to 3 minutes usually).
After the marshmallow mix is ready put about ¾ of the sugar on top of the mix. Then prepare a surface to blend the mix together on.
Grease the surface of your counter or table generously with Crisco while at the same time greasing your hands also. Turn out the mix on the surface and start kneading it together like you would do to a bread mix. Keep kneading and adding the rest of the sugar, if the mix starts sticking to your hands and or countertop apply more Crisco shortening to your hands and countertop.
Once you get a firm, smooth elastic like ball wrap it tightly with plastic wrap so no air can get to it, then put the whole thing in a zippered plastic bag and store in the refrigerator for later.
